How to Career Fair

Research:

Our career fair features over 50 employers. You may not be able to talk with every representative. Visit the company websites, learn about job opportunities, job locations, goals, programs, job openings, skills needed, majors wanted, and company history and current events. Narrow down your selection so that you can spend your time efficiently.

Resume:

A resume is a one-page outline of your academic prowess, extracurricular involvement, work experience and special skills. Bring plenty of copies to the fair to hand out to the recruiters. For specifics on how to compose a resume, visit http://careerservices.rutgers.edu/.

Dress:

Men should wear a dark suit with a white or lightly colored long sleeved shirt,  tie, and dark socks. Women should have a dark suit with a tailored top or a classic style dress, dark shoes, natural color stockings, dark socks to match slacks as well as low to medium heel shoes.

Interviewing:

You should have a 30-second, or less, commercial ready as an introduction. Have a list of questions prepared about the company that you would like to ask. Have responses prepared for anything the employer may ask you about your resume or your interest in the company. Take your time rehearsing before the fair, and train your communication skills. You will leave a lasting impression as a student who articulates his or her interests well. When you meet the recruiter, engage in a firm handshake, maintain eye contact, and listen carefully to everything he or she has to say.

Follow up:

Keep in contact with the employers that you have spoken with. Calling or writing to the employer demonstrates your continued interest in the company. It makes you stand out as a valuable asset. Thank the employer for his or her time, restate your interests and background, send another resume, and save your contacts for future reference.
